Parish News - August 2011

NETTLESTONE AND SEAVIEW PARISH COUNCIL NEWS – August 2011

A packed July meeting listened to concerns about the unreliability of Southern Vectis Bus Service 8. A petition, signed by more than sixty local residents in support of the complaint was handed to the Chairman, Councillor John Kalaher. It was agreed to list the complaints in a letter to Southern Vectis with a representative of the bus company being invited to a future meeting.

On street parking in Nettlestone was also of serious concern, particularly to our two local businesses, Vic’s Stores and the Old Post Office, both risking closure if the situation does not improve. It was agreed to request a Temporary Traffic Order to restrict parking times on the stretch of Nettlestone Green around the two shops during peak periods. Further suggestions to alleviate the situation included school children walking crocodiles from the Wishing Well (crossing assistance required at the top of Nettlestone Hill) and Orchard Road. Both businesses stressed the damage caused by longer term parking. The proposed beach huts at the Duver were also discussed and it was agreed to write to the Head of Planning, requesting that all conditions are put in place before any development commences. Members agreed to object to the planning application for the demolition of the Catholic Church amid serious concerns about a lack of consultation. The revised application for Red Cross Cottage was supported. Other matters discussed included a Street Trading Licence which was supported subject to no sale of beachwear; On Licence for Made on the Wight to which Members objected amid concerns about the effect on established local businesses; allotment rents for 2011/2012 which were set at £3.70 per rod.

Members agreed to provide Victim Support, Isle of Wight Musical Competition Festival and Wight Squirrel Project with grants of £50.00 each, whilst support for church yard maintenance at St Helens Church was set at £400.00.

As there is no Parish Council meeting in August, the next one will take place on Monday19th September in the Masonic Hall, Fairy Road, Seaview commencing at 7.00pm. Please come along and ask questions/make comments on any matter of local concern.
